Online Learning FAQs
How do the MEd in MESA online courses work?
The MEd in MESA online courses rely on asynchronous discussion and collaboration as the principle form of communication. Via a Web-based system (Blackboard), students interact extensively with one another and the instructor. Students participate anytime day or night, when their schedules allow, while still meeting due dates for assignments.
I am new to online learning and am not familiar with Blackboard. How does Blackboard work?
To learn more about this Web-based education tool, visit the Blackboard Resource page for video tutorials. If you still have questions after watching the demo, please contact the MESA Online Admissions Team via e-mail or by phone at (866) 772-2268, option 1.
Can I communicate one-on-one with instructors?
Yes. In addition to using Blackboard, you can communicate with instructors via e-mail, phone and/or Skype. Rest assured, questions and concerns are answered in a timely manner.
When should I log in to the courses?
There are no specific times or days of the week required for log in as long as assignments are completed by the due dates specified in the course syllabi. We recommend logging in at least four times per week to stay on track, but you may need to log in more frequently for some courses.
I’m not sure about e-learning in general. Can I try out a single online course in the MEd in MESA online program or the ERM online certificate program?
Individuals who wish to try out a single course in the MEd in MESA online program or the ERM online certificate program may be able to apply to UIC as a non-degree extramural online student. Once an individual is admitted as an extramural online student, the student may register for program courses for which they have met the applicable prerequisites. However, admission under this status neither implies nor guarantees admission to the MEd in MESA online program or the ERM online certificate program. Extramural students must still formally apply and be accepted into the MEd in MESA online program or the ERM online certificate program.
Note: Up to 12 semester hours of credit earned at UIC as a non-degree extramural student can be transferred toward the MEd in MESA online program on the condition that the student is accepted into the MEd in MESA online program.
