Online Master’s Program: Dr. Hall gives a glimpse into the mixed methods online MESA course experience

In the realm of mixed methods, researchers combine qualitative and quantitative research to take a well-rounded approach to different topics and inquiries.

Dr. Jori N. Hall, University of Illinois Chicago Professor of the online Measurement, Evaluation, Statistics and Assessment (MESA) programs, teaches the asynchronous online course EPSY 594: Mixed Methods Approaches to Social Science Research. She introduces students to the theory and practice of mixing inquiry methodologies in program evaluation and other forms of applied educational and social science research.

With over 15 years of online teaching experience, Dr. Hall gives insight into her online course. She offers students weekly learning modules that are built on the course’s cumulative structure. By the end of the course, students will have developed a mixed methods proposal that highlights their own individual interests. Learn more about the online experience and the EPSY 594 course.

Mixed methods research combines qualitative and quantitative research methods which can introduce complexity into research design. Dr. Hall shows an example of a module prompt that encourages students to think about the diagram for their mixed methods design. Up until this point, students will have covered a lot of content about mixed method approaches and designs, such as the different types and why they’re important.

Build a community in this online asynchronous course.

Dr. Hall understands the importance of building a sense of community in an online asynchronous course. In the EPSY 594 course, Dr. Hall assigns students with a peer partner to accompany them on their mixed methods research journey. They will have conversations about design, understand each other’s topics intimately, and provide feedback and encouragement along the way.
